A Weekend Filled With Country (2/2): Luke Combs In Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff Arena
From Clubs to Stadiums: Luke Combs Assumes the Country Throne at a Sold-Out Johan Cruijff Arena
After witnessing an absolute masterclass of an intimate club show from the rising stars of the scene the night before, it was time to shift gears. From the cosy confines of the Melkweg, we stepped directly into the stratosphere to witness a country artist currently operating at the absolute peak of his powers: Luke Combs.
It feels like just yesterday, though in reality, it was a mere three years ago, that we vividly remember standing inside AFAS Live. We were ecstatic just to attend and capture that show, completely oblivious to the fact that within a few short years, Luke Combs’ popularity would skyrocket. He didn’t just grow; he leapt from a 6,000-capacity room straight into the absolute biggest venue the Netherlands has to offer: Amsterdam’s iconic Johan Cruijff Arena, home of Ajax.
A jaw-dropping, mind-boggling crowd of 50,000 country fans flocked to the stadium. It wasn’t just a concert; it felt like a massive, collective celebration of the meteoric rise of Country music in The Netherlands as a whole. To see a genre that was once considered a niche American export completely take over a European football stadium in such a short timespan is nothing short of extraordinary.
Non-Stop Anthems and Stadium-Sized Production
Much like The Castellows’ philosophy the evening prior, Luke Combs clearly believes in giving the fans their absolute money’s worth by packing as much music as humanly possible into his allotted time. For a production of this gargantuan scale, that meant nearly two hours of non-stop, high-energy performance.
In those two hours, Combs powered through a staggering 28-song setlist. A massive highlight of the night was a brilliant cover medley featuring snippets of iconic tracks like Crazy Train and Billie Jean, a moment where Combs graciously stepped back to put his incredibly tight backing band at the forefront. And, of course, while we’re on the subject of covers, the collective voice of 50,000 people echoed through the rafters when he launched into his Grammy-nominated rendition of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, a cover that he has truly made legendary all over again.
The rest of the evening was a beautifully curated journey through his discography, with a heavy, nostalgic nod toward his 2017 breakout album This One’s For You. Massive fan favourites like When It Rains It Pours, Hurricane, and the sweeping ballad Beautiful Crazy tore the roof off the arena, proving that these songs have become timeless anthems for the Dutch crowd.
A Down-To-Earth Superstar
While Combs moved through his material with rapid-fire precision, the visual aspect of the show was a cinematic marvel. Pyrotechnics flared, lasers cut through the stadium air, and massive fireworks erupted, ensuring that even the fans in the very last rows of the upper deck were fully immersed in the experience. Giant, crystal-clear LED screens framed the stage, capturing every detail of the performance up close. It was thanks to these massive screens that the entire stadium caught a beautifully human, humorous moment right at the start of the gig: Combs was aggressively strumming his guitar, only to abruptly stop with a laugh as a string snapped mid-song. He laughed it off like a seasoned pro, swapped guitars, and didn’t miss a single beat.
In-between tracks, Combs would chat with the audience, keeping his stories brief but deeply impactful. He spoke about the raw context and personal heartbreak behind certain songs as if he were just sitting next to you, nursing a cold beer at a local dive bar. The level of comfort, humility, and genuine ease this man portrays while commanding a stadium of 50,000 screaming fans is profoundly admirable. It injected a rare sense of intimacy and familiarity into a show that was, by all accounts, completely monumental.
It is still almost beyond comprehension that an artist we shot (with a camera) at AFAS Live just a few years back can now effortlessly command and sell out the Johan Cruijff Arena in record time. We are so incredibly grateful to have witnessed both sides of this coin this weekend, the intimate club roots and the stadium-sized reality, and to track this mind-blowing growth firsthand.
A massive thank you to Luke Combs’ team and the incredible folks at Green House Talent for taking a gamble on bringing these massive Country productions overseas and executing them so flawlessly. The Dutch countryside revolution is officially here, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
