The highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 spinoff hit, The Nun, is set to terrify audiences once again with its chilling tale of demonic possession. The Nun 2 brings back Taissa Farmiga in her role as Sister Irene, and a first look image debuted exclusively over at Entertainment Weekly, giving fans a glimpse of the terror that awaits her as she confronts the malevolent Valak, portrayed by Bonnie Aarons, once more.

It has been a two-year dry spell for fans of The Conjuring Universe since the release of the most recent installment, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, in 2021. However, the long-awaited drought is about to end later this year when The Nun 2 hits theaters. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the first film was a massive box office success, raking in an impressive $365 million worldwide. Surprisingly, The Nun holds the title of the highest-grossing film in the entire Conjuring Universe, surpassing even the two core Conjuring movies directed by James Wan.

The Nun 2, directed by Michael Chaves, known for his work on Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 8, 2023, exactly five years after Valak first dominated the box office in her solo debut.

The official plot synopsis for The Nun 2 has been revealed: “1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit ‘The Nun’ follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force Valak – the Demon Nun.”

In the interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Michael Chaves shared more insights into the storyline: “Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”

Chaves further teased that The Nun 2 would have connections to the wider cinematic universe, leaving fans eager to uncover the intricacies of the Conjuring Universe’s expanding mythology.

Joining Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons in the cast of The Nun 2 are talented newcomers Storm Reid, known for her role in Euphoria, Anna Popplewell from The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, and Katelyn Rose Downey, making her mark with Clean Sweep.

With the first look image raising anticipation levels and the promising return of beloved characters, horror enthusiasts are eagerly counting down the days. Check out the image below and let us know your thoughts!
