‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Rakes In $142 Million In Opening Weekend Worldwide

Warner Bros.‘ latest shark attack sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, has taken a big bite out of the box office, grossing $142 million worldwide during its debut weekend. The film’s opening weekend in the United States brought in $30 million, which is $15 million lower than its predecessor, The Meg, back in 2018. However, the studio has high hopes for international success, with a significant portion of the earnings coming from China.

Notably, Meg 2: The Trench opened with $53 million in China, surpassing The Meg‘s $50 million debut in 2018. This achievement places it in an exclusive club of Hollywood sequels that have outperformed their franchise predecessors in China since 2019, joining the ranks of Avatar 2 and Godzilla Vs. Kong.

With a reported production budget ranging from $129 to $139 million, the new sequel comes in slightly under the production budget of the first installment, which was estimated at $130 to $178 million. The film follows a research team, including Jason Statham, as they encounter various threats while exploring the ocean’s depths, including a malevolent mining operation.

Directed by Ben Wheatley and featuring a screenplay by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris, Meg 2: The Trench captures the essence of B-movie spectacle, embracing aquatic horror and delivering nonstop entertainment.
