CONCERT REVIEW: A Perfect Circle Re-establishes Towering Stature In Amsterdam

Following a massively successful, intimate night at Tilburg’s Poppodium 013, alternative rock maestros A Perfect Circle made their highly anticipated stop in the capital city. Taking over a completely filled-to-the-brim AFAS Live in Amsterdam, the room was already scorching hot before the band even stepped foot on stage, packed with a hungry crowd eager to witness the legendary outfit’s second Dutch performance of the week.

As we have firmly come to expect from any live project involving enigmatic vocalist Maynard James Keenan, recording or photographing with mobile devices was strictly prohibited. Shortly after stepping on stage, Keenan pleaded directly with the audience to keep their phones firmly tucked away in their pockets altogether, urging everyone to connect with the music organically.

The stage production was visual poetry, anchored by a massive screen serving as a backdrop. Throughout the evening, it seamlessly shifted between the band’s iconic logo, moody thematic imagery, and live camera feeds tracking the musicians at their respective stations. True to form, Keenan bypassed the traditional frontline spotlight, instead commanding the room from an elevated platform stationed at the middle-back portion of the stage, cloaked in minimal lighting and shrouded in a thick layer of atmospheric fog.

The band made an exceptionally powerful opening statement with the slow-burning intensity of The Package. After delivering the track flawlessly, Keenan took a brief moment to address the crowd with a poignant message of global unity, reiterating his plea to banish the screens. In a show of good faith, he promised that the phone ban would be lifted entirely for the final song of the evening, the iconic anthem Judith, allowing fans to capture the finale to their hearts’ content.

Following that gripping introduction, the band seamlessly transitioned into a brilliant trio of tracks from their latest full-length album, Eat The Elephant. They kicked things off with the fan-favorite Disillusioned, a track whose lyrical commentary on societal disconnection feels just as vital today as the day it was written, if not more so. Halfway through the performance, the heavy wall of instrumentation peeled back entirely, leaving only a soothing, delicate keyboard melody to carry the interlude. Credit where credit is due: the Dutch audience is notoriously infamous for talking through quiet live moments, but on this humid evening, you could literally hear a pin drop across the venue as the piano tones echoed through the silent room.

From that point forward, the evening shifted entirely into a musical-first experience. Aside from a few short sentences uttered between movements, the focus remained locked onto the sheer quality of the live musicianship. Fans were treated to an extraordinary, pristine performance that effortlessly reestablished A Perfect Circle‘s towering stature in the alternative music industry. This band truly possesses a rare, lightning-in-a-bottle type of chemistry. The combination of their heavy-to-soft sonic transitions, profound lyricism, and the calculated mystique surrounding the players makes their live show an elite experience.

Every single track on the setlist felt like a gift, offering a live realization of songs fans have adored for decades. A Perfect Circle are undeniably among the absolute best live bands you can witness on a stage, and nearly selling out back-to-back shows in the Netherlands is a massive testament to their enduring legacy.

While the minimal lighting and heavy fog made capturing the band an elite-level challenge for our photographer Eva van den Bosch, you can check out the shots from this exquisite performance in the gallery below!
