ALBUM REVIEW: Thornhill – Heroine

Thornhill dropped their new album Heroine this lovely Friday, June 3rd, 2022. This album is truly a beautiful and astonishing work of art. Who knew metalcore could be so alluring and enticing? Thornhill bring a new element to the rock scene with this album, each song leaves you wanting more and more. This entire track list is so captivating. We’ve heard the singles Raw, Arkangel, Cassanova and Hollywood ahead of this album drop, but this entire album put together tells a truly sensual storyline. You have all-out heavy headbangers, and deep intimate melodic tunes all in one place. Like we’ve said before, is there anything this band can’t do? We are blown away, Thornhill! Let’s dive right into a breakdown of each track.

The Hellfire Club
This swingy yet punchy song is so sexy! I mean just listening to Jacob sing about his burning passion for this mystery lover makes you feel as if he’s singing right to your soul. With lyrics such as “I fall so easily, won’t you stay awhile?”, “Hold on so you can sweat me out”, and “oh slowly, oh you’re so lovely”. We are lost in a steamy daydream. The imagery this song gives you is top-tier!

Leather Wings
The bridge in this track is haunting! It’ll be stuck in your head indefinitely. The instrumentals and synth are so dark and bouncy and deliver a very submersive feeling. This song makes you experience a dark turning, almost as if you yourself are turning into this leather-winged creature of the night. Let it consume you.

Blue Velvet
The heavenly ballad of this album, makes you feel as if you’re ascending into heaven itself. This sensual song is easily the rock love song of the year. “My fingers intertwined, you were my divine, just take me down baby, I love the sound”. Are you falling in love yet? Because we definitely are. “Your intimate design, you’ll be mine in time.” This is definitely a song to send to your crush! It’s so abducting.

Arkangel
This song slaps! I’m sure you’ve heard it ahead of the album release, it’s so heavy and bewitching. Easily one of the best songs in the metal universe this year. We still can’t get enough. “I need an angel, to slay, I see red.” Dark desires are taking ahold, and we’re here for it. Slay Thornhill, slay

Valentine
A slow lo-fi almost jazzy song that makes you feel like you’re set back in time, on an adventure into the unknown of love through an echo. “You lure me in vicariously, like a bullet.” This is a song you could put on repeat and get lost in. Be careful.

Casanova
If you don’t know the definition of Casanova, it is ‘a man known for seducing women and having many lovers.’ They did not disappoint. Another groovy banger from Thornhill! They’ve mastered the art of making you want to rock out and swing your hips at the same time. When Jacob says “you’re mine”, the world stops. The absolute shredding from guitarists Ethan and Matt, bassist Nick, and drummer Ben in this track are on another level, we salute all of you Thornhill for charming us all.

Something Came with the Rain
A short but sweet melody is a no-vocal track in the middle of the track list, beautiful and building up to the next tracks to come. The guitar lines and atmosphere are so calming, and really make you relax. We appreciate the otherworldly vibes even if it is brief. Are we in a video game right now?

Hollywood
Ever so lusty. This song is like falling into a black hole of fantasy. The clean vocals, screaming, and intense instrumentals are guaranteed to get your blood flowing. “Can you just say I’m in love with my girl in Hollywood?” Of course Thornhill, but we’re in love with you now more than ever!

Raw
A song you can’t live without. Seriously, one of the best on the album. What’s better than Thornhill saying they want you and everything you’ve got? Definitely a song that will get the crowd moving while playing a show. This song is teasing in the best way, and they’re not fucking around.

Varsity Hearts
A delightful mix of different sounds, but don’t mistake it for being anything less than possessing. This track is naughty in the most pleasing way, it transforms as it plays through. We’ve never heard anything else like it. This is a harmonic, hook-up-ridden, radiant bath of satisfying notes. A true anthem.

Heroine
Of course, this song is iconic, they named the album after it. This is the last song on the album, but man oh man is it powerful. The definition of a heroine is, ‘A woman of superhuman qualities and often semi-divine origin.’ Well, that’s exactly what Jacob describes in this final number. “So don’t break my heart, Let me be with you.”

I hope this woman knows she’s incredibly lucky. This is a peek inside the feelings of falling for someone, and hoping it all goes right.. everyone can relate.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this collection of hard work and spectacular music from Jacob, Matt, Ben, Nick, and Ethan, and it will definitely be more than in rotation for the rest of the days, weeks, months, and years to come! Any fan of Thornhill will agree. It was worth the wait, and we are so excited to share this album review with the world, and hope you decide to give it a listen.
