Simple Plan took over Amsterdam’s AFAS Live for a night of pop-punk nostalgia, celebrating 25+ years as one of the genre’s most enduring and beloved acts. From the moment the first blast of CO2 steam cannons pierced the air, it was clear the Canadian veterans came to deliver a stadium-sized party and they didn’t hold back for a single second.
It has been a minute since Dutch fans got to experience a Simple Plan headliner on a scale this massive. While the band has certainly stayed active on the festival circuit, their recent standalone headline visits to the Netherlands were anchored at Tilburg’s Poppodium 013, playing to roughly 3,000 fans per night. Stepping up to the impressive 6,000-capacity AFAS Live marked a huge milestone for this tour, doubling their usual headliner footprint in the country and proving that their fanbase here hasn’t just stuck around, it has grown.
This massive surge in crowd size is no coincidence. While the venue was packed to the rafters with millennial fans eager to relive their teenage years, the room was visibly peppered with a much younger generation of concertgoers. Much of this new wave can be traced back to a few years ago, when their iconic debut single “I’m Just A Kid” exploded on TikTok, introducing the band’s signature angst to millions of Gen Z listeners. That cross-generational leap was on full display tonight: veteran fans who grew up with the band stood side-by-side with teenagers experiencing them live for the very first time, creating a unique atmosphere where everyone knew every single word.
The band delivered a setlist expertly tailored to the moment. While heavy on crowd-favorite anthems that have been staples of their live shows for decades, the crowd sang along to every word with unchanged, deafening enthusiasm. It wasn’t just a trip down memory lane, either. The inclusion of their newer track, “Nothing Changes,” offered a refreshing breath of fresh energy, blending seamlessly alongside classics like “Summer Paradise”, “Your Love Is A Lie” and “Welcome to My Life.”
Simple Plan’s shows have always been built on a deep, authentic connection with their fanbase, but tonight took interactive stage moments to a whole new level. During their iconic Scooby-Doo theme song performance, the band invited a sea of fans dressed head-to-toe in Scooby costumes onto the stage, turning the entire venue into a delightfully chaotic, feel-good party.
The emotional highlight of the evening came with a dramatic shift in pacing. Frontman Pierre Bouvier made his way through the room to a small B-stage nestled towards the back of the floor, performing a stunning rendition of “Untitled” on the piano. The intimate moment held the entire 6,000-capacity room spellbound before Bouvier made his way back to the main stage directly through the roaring crowd, high-fiving ecstatic fans every step of the way.
Just when it seemed the energy couldn’t peak any higher, the encore brought total chaos during “I’m Just A Kid.” In classic Simple Plan fashion, Pierre and drummer Chuck Comeau swapped places. With Bouvier holding down the rhythm behind the kit, Comeau took the mic, hyped up the arena, and launched himself directly off the stage for a dramatic crowd-surf, riding a sea of hands across the pit while the room erupted.
Packed with CO2 cannons, relentless fan interaction, and twenty-five years’ worth of timeless hits, Simple Plan proved once again that age hasn’t slowed them down one bit. It was loud, chaotic, deeply nostalgic, and an absolute masterclass in pop-punk performance.
