On September 22nd, Jiluka ended their DeVils EU tour with a bang at Tivoli Vredenburg’s Pandora stage. The Japanese visual kei band mixes heaviness with crazy electronic drops and had the crowd in continuous motion. The extremities of their music are reflected in the diversity of their fanbase, people from many different subcultures met in the mosh pits and walls of death that night. The energy was tangible almost as soon as the opening band, homegrown metal talent Changing Tides, began their set. Their music brutally heavy and their enthusiasm infective, the crowd that showed up early seemed thoroughly impressed by the Dutch band. On to the main event, Jiluka seems to truly have found their groove, especially with their most recent work. The lighting and theatrics really amp up the grandeur of some of these newer songs. The band did not miss a beat and they moved like a well-oiled machine, after going at it for over a decade. While they’re in a very particular niche both visually and sound-wise, they have broken boundaries and filled a room on the other side of the world with excited fans and that is something to be applauded, for sure.
