Dave Grohl is working on some very interesting new material!

First off, he is working on a new song, which is not much for a musician like him, you might say, but well, said new song comes with a twist: it’s going to be an instrumental with a total length of 23 minutes. Yep.

The track is called “PLAY” and sees Grohl play no less than seven instruments. It will be available as of August 10. Preorders can be made here.

About the story behind the song, the Foo Fighters frontman has shared:

“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… […] And when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out. And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

But as if that wasn’t challenging and time consuming enough, he will also be releasing a two part documentary about the song and how it came together, including different versions of the track as well as Dave Grohl interviewing some of the students at the Join The Band music school in LA where his kids have lessons.

Are you excited for this very special song? What do you think it’s going to sound like? Will you be able to listen to it in one sitting? Feel free to share your predictions with us!

You can check out a small teaser of “PLAY” below.
