‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Rakes In $142 Million In Opening Weekend Worldwide

Warner Bros.‘ latest shark attack sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, has taken a big bite out of the box office, grossing $142 million worldwide during its debut weekend. The film’s opening weekend in the United States brought in $30 million, which is $15 million lower than its predecessor, The Meg, back in 2018. However, the studio has high hopes for international success, with a significant portion of the earnings coming from China.

Notably, Meg 2: The Trench opened with $53 million in China, surpassing The Meg‘s $50 million debut in 2018. This achievement places it in an exclusive club of Hollywood sequels that have outperformed their franchise predecessors in China since 2019, joining the ranks of Avatar 2 and Godzilla Vs. Kong.

With a reported production budget ranging from $129 to $139 million, the new sequel comes in slightly under the production budget of the first installment, which was estimated at $130 to $178 million. The film follows a research team, including Jason Statham, as they encounter various threats while exploring the ocean’s depths, including a malevolent mining operation.

Directed by Ben Wheatley and featuring a screenplay by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris, Meg 2: The Trench captures the essence of B-movie spectacle, embracing aquatic horror and delivering nonstop entertainment.

Official Trailer Released For ‘Meg 2: The Trench’

The highly-anticipated trailer for Meg 2: The Trench has finally surfaced, and it’s making waves (haha) across the internet. The sequel to the 2018 hit film The Meg is set to release on August 4, 2023, and from the looks of the trailer, it promises to be a bigger and more intense ride.

Directed by Ben Wheatley (In the Earth, Free Fire) and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (The Meg, Bumblebee) and Belle Avery (The Meg, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead), Meg 2: The Trench takes the action to new heights and depths. It follows a team of researchers led by Jason Statham and Wu Jing as they embark on an exploratory journey into the ocean’s deepest depths. Their mission takes a dangerous turn when they face off against massive prehistoric sharks.

The trailer, which runs for three minutes, is filled with underwater spine-tingling horror. It starts with The Meg tearing apart a T-Rex and only gets more intense from there. Fans of the original movie will be pleased to see the return of Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis, alongside new cast members Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Skyler Samuels.

The screenplay is written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (The Meg, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Dean Georgaris (The Meg, Lara Croft: Toom Raider – The Cradle of Life), based on the novel The Trench by Steve Alten. The film is executive produced by Jason Statham, Cate Adams, Ruigang Li, Catherine Xujun Ying, Wu Jing, E. Bennett Walsh, Erik Howsam, Gerald R. Molen, and Randy Greenberg.

The original film, directed by Jon Turteltaub, was also based on Steve Alten‘s Meg novels and grossed over $500 million at the worldwide box office. The sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, looks set to surpass the original with its bigger budget and even more jaw-dropping action. Fans of shark attack movies and thrill-seekers alike won’t want to miss this summer blockbuster.
