Billie Joe Armstrong Covers Jesse Malin’s ‘Black Haired Girl’ For Benefit Album

Billie Joe Armstrong, the iconic frontman of Green Day, has released a cover of Jesse Malin’s Black Haired Girl for the tribute and benefit album Silver Patron Saints: The Songs Of Jesse Malin. This album, set for release on September 20th, features a star-studded lineup including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Frank Turner, Rancid, and many more.

The project aims to raise funds for Jesse Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund, established following a rare spinal stroke Jesse suffered last year. This fund provides financial support to musicians in need, a cause that has rallied numerous artists to contribute their talents.

“Jesse is a dear friend to me,” Billie Joe shared. “I love his songwriting. He is all heart, and his passion is endless. We send each other YouTube videos – mostly old Ramones clips and New York Dolls. Every time I’m in New York he goes out of his way to make me, my friends, and my family feel at home. He’s always down for a laugh or a shoulder to cry on. Jesse, we love you and we’d do anything for you.”

Jesse Malin expressed his admiration for Armstrong’s rendition, saying, “When I heard Billie Joe was doing ‘Black Haired Girl,’ I was so blown away. He took it to another level, a lot of attitude, a lot of power, a lot of style, like everything that he does.”

The release of Silver Patron Saints is highly anticipated, promising a blend of heartfelt performances and a strong sense of community support within the music industry. Fans of both Armstrong and Malin can look forward to a collection that not only celebrates Malin’s songwriting but also contributes to a meaningful cause.

Green Day shared their excitement:

“We’ve all rocked Dickies as long as we can remember, so teaming up with them to honour 30 years of ‘Dookie’ is pretty rad!”

Troy Kerr, Dickies’ marketing director, said:

“We are so excited to work with a band as legendary as Green Day as they celebrate ‘Dookie’’s 30th anniversary and their upcoming world tour.

“As a workwear brand organically adopted by so many, the partnership was a natural fit, aligning with our values and allowing us to develop a collection that celebrates both the band and the hard-working crew behind the scenes.”

The Green Day x Dickies collection is available now on Green Day’s webstore and will be in Urban Outfitters starting June 14th.

Green Day To Play Shows In South Africa For First Time Ever

Green Day have announced they will perform in South Africa for the first time in January 2025. They will play in Johannesburg at the FNB Stadium on January 19th, and in Cape Town at the DHL Stadium on January 23th. Joining them will be The Offspring, and a local band from South Africa named Fokofpolisiekar.

But before that, Green Day are going on a big tour in 2024 called The Saviors Tour. They will play songs from their old albums Dookie and American Idiot from start to finish, and also play some new songs from their latest album called Saviors.

Mike Dirnt, who plays bass guitar in the band, talked to Kerrang! about how excited they are. “We’re excited. I’m excited about the fact that people are excited about Dookie and American Idiot’s anniversaries. I mean, the fact that we’re launching a new record at the same time as those albums having their anniversaries is a strange anomaly, but also really awesome. And it gives us an opportunity to put together one hell of a show. We can deviate from it – we can do whatever we want to do – but, man, there’s a lot of friggin’ fun songs to play!”

So, Green Day fans have a lot to look forward to with concerts all around the world in 2024 and the band’s first-ever shows in South Africa in 2025.
