Enter Shikari’s Rou Reynolds Joins Cast Of Jeff Wayne’s ‘The War Of The Worlds ‘

In an exciting development for fans of both progressive rock and alternative music, Enter Shikari frontman and synth player Rou Reynolds will be stepping into the role of The Artilleryman in next year’s live tour of Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War Of The Worlds. This announcement adds yet another dynamic layer to the long-running stage adaptation of H.G. Wells‘ classic 19th-century sci-fi novel, where Martians invade Earth.

Jeff Wayne’s musical adaptation, renowned for its progressive rock elements and theatrical storytelling, has been captivating audiences since the late ’70s. The Artilleryman is a pivotal character in the production, and over the years, several notable artists, including David Essex and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson, have brought their unique interpretations to the role.

“Since 2006, when we began touring arenas around the world, I’ve always been thrilled to welcome what is now a long list of great artists,” says Jeff Wayne. “This coming tour, for the role of The Artilleryman, I reached out to the lead singer of the wonderful Enter Shikari – Rou Reynolds – a massive talent whose voice thrills, and his personality matches. He will create his own interpretation of the enigmatic Artilleryman.”

Rou Reynolds, known for his energetic performances and genre-blending music with Enter Shikari, shared his enthusiasm about joining the cast. “I first discovered Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of The Worlds through my dad and uncle, who grew up being blown away by the original double album,” he says. “Their great respect and enthusiasm for Jeff’s work makes it a true honour to be involved. I’m excited to be playing the role of The Artilleryman and stepping into the shoes of luminaries such as David Essex, Ricky Wilson, Adam Garcia, and all those who’ve played the role before me.”

Reynolds also expressed his desire to explore new artistic avenues. “As exemplified by the path that my band, Enter Shikari, follows, it’s important for me to practice breadth in my art, and keep pushing myself. I understand that performing in a musical production isn’t the sort of thing people from our scene normally do, but my band has never paid much attention to what is expected of us. I relish this challenge.”

The new production of The War Of The Worlds, dubbed The Spirit Of Man Tour, is set to take place next spring in arenas across the UK. Fans can look forward to a fresh and compelling rendition of the classic tale, with Rou Reynolds bringing his distinctive flair to the role of The Artilleryman. This tour promises to be a memorable event, bridging the worlds of progressive rock and alternative music in a spectacular theatrical experience.

CONCERT REVIEW: Enter Shikari Play Intimate Show In Haarlem

Usually, Enter Shikari thrive in bigger productions, with big light productions and huge crowds, so tonight’s venue is very intimate compared. Serving as a warm-up to their upcoming festival shows, they announced this one headlining show in Patronaat Haarlem two months ago, after having an astronomical night in Amsterdam back in February.

The evening starts with a very excitable crowd, wondering what might be in the setlist of Enter Shikari for the only full-length show they’ll do in the next couple of months. There’s not much time to speculate though, as the support act Blackout Problems comes on at 7:50 pm, only 20 minutes after doors opened. The German band opened for Enter Shikari on their last tour, and given they have collaborated on a song too, they did a good job in warming up the crowd before.

During the first song lead singer Mario Radetzky already climbs into the (at this point still slowly filling up) crowd, and this became a regular thing for him during the set. Close your eyes and he’s back at the sound booth in the back, turn around and he’s up on the balcony, and back on stage the next second. The energy the band gives the crowd is happily returned by us, although you can tell the crowd is saving most of their energy for Enter Shikari. After a glittery outfit change for the last couple of songs, they also remind us of their upcoming show in Paradiso in October. With the way they get the crowd going, anyone going to their show will have an amazing time then too.

By the time Enter Shikari walks on stage, the crowd instantly breaks into a moshpit that doesn’t stop until the show is over. The intimacy of tonight’s smaller venue makes for a crowd that’s elated to be there, as it sold out in mere minutes. Everyone there has been a fan for years, which also makes for a very good energy amongst each other. The vibes are immaculate, everyone is dancing and singing along to every word.

The visual performances and production quality the fans have gotten used to over the last years are missing for tonight’s warm-up show. With the setlist being mostly overlapping with what they played on their last tour, it almost feels like they took a step back. Nevertheless, the intimacy of this show more than makes up for the lack of lasers and fireworks. The band looks more comfortable and maybe even more confident to perform for this smaller crowd. They’re having a couple of laughs in between songs, and there’s an edge of familiarity to them they usually don’t get to show off that much anymore. After the dance party that is satellites* *, they play the intro of Limp Bizkit’s Break Stuff, showing how relaxed the band is feeling for tonight and their upcoming festival shows.

The on-stage banter in between a couple of songs and the solo the pressure’s on by singer Rou Reynolds on the balcony, also make for good breathers in a crowd that constantly moves, before they go into yet another crowd-favorite song. A big testament to the band is the way the people everywhere in the room are looking out for each other. There’s a lot of joy to be found from the front row to the balcony as if it’s being passed around by the crowd-surfing fans. The entire floor is swept up into a circle pit the size of the venue by the encore. We are the goldfish, Enter Shikari is the bowl, we are simply under their control, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Catch Enter Shikari at one of their upcoming festival sets to see if they got warmed up enough at this sweaty show!

Enter Shikari have a busy summer ahead. Much like Fit For A King, Enter Shikari will be present at Jera On Air too. To prepare for the festival summer ahead, Enter Shikari played a smaller club show in The Netherlands last night to warm up and take their elaborate stage set-up for a test drive before hitting the festival circuit.

Enter Shikari‘s set kicked off their mainstage set with frontman and vocalist Rou Reynolds walking on stage and starting the spoken intro of System…. When it was time for the instrumental part of System… and its counterpart …Meltdown to kick in, Frontman Rou Reynolds and his bandmates wasted no time in ramping up the energy. Their dynamic stage presence was infectious, igniting the audience from the get-go. The set kicked off with a mix of newer tracks and classics. Highlights of the show included the anthemic Live Outside, which had everyone singing along, and the explosive Sssnakepit, which transformed the crowd into a sea of movement and energy.

The setlist was a testament to Enter Shikari‘s evolution over the years, seamlessly blending tracks from their early days with newer material. This balance not only showcased the band’s growth but also catered to both long-time fans and newer listeners alike. Enter Shikari have been on the scene for a while and it not only shows by their discography. The band is comfortable on stage and effortlessly combines musicianship with entertainment. We have thoroughly enjoyed the band’s set and are now more eager than ever to see what they have in store for their headliner slot at Jera On Air later this month.
