After just one season, the CW network has decided to cancel The Winchesters, a prequel series to the long-running hit show Supernatural. This decision is not entirely surprising, as the show was considered a long shot for renewal due to the network’s new ownership and its focus on unscripted and lower-cost scripted programming, primarily international acquisitions and co-productions, in pursuit of profitability.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the show, is currently searching for a new home for The Winchesters, raising the possibility that the series may be picked up by another network or streaming platform.
The Winchesters follows the origin story of Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary, detailing their meeting and how they risked everything to save their love and the world. The prequel features Meg Donnelly as Mary, a 19-year-old who has been fighting the forces of darkness since she was a child. After considering quitting the family business, she is forced to lead a new team with the arrival of newcomer John, played by Drake Rodger, who has recently returned from Vietnam and finds a new mission as a hunter.
Jensen Ackles, who played Dean Winchester in Supernatural, returned to narrate The Winchesters and also executive produced the project. The series was written and executive produced by Supernatural executive producer Robbie Thompson.
While The Winchesters may not have been picked up for a second season on The CW, fans of the show can hold out hope that it will find a new home and continue to explore the early adventures of the beloved Winchester family.
