After the smashing box office success of the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie, fans have been eagerly anticipating a possible sequel to the hit film. However, the acclaimed director has responded to the demand, revealing that there are no immediate plans for a Barbie 2.

During its opening weekend, the Barbie movie shattered box office records, boasting the highest-grossing debut for a film that isn’t a sequel, remake, or superhero property. Critics also lauded the performances of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the rest of the talented cast, further fueling the desire for a follow-up.

In an interview with The New York Times, Greta Gerwig expressed her delight at the film’s reception, stating, “I wanted to make something anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic. The idea that it’s actually being received that way, it’s sort of extraordinary.”

When questioned about plans for a sequel and expanding the Barbie franchise, Gerwig candidly responded, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

While the director’s current stance indicates that a Barbie sequel is not in immediate development, she also left room for future possibilities. Meanwhile, toy giant Mattel has revealed ambitious plans for their cinematic universe, with 14 more toy-inspired movies in the works, including projects based on Uno, Hot Wheels, and a Polly Pocket film starring Lily Collins with Lena Dunham as the director.

As Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie continues to captivate audiences, the film has also faced conservative backlash. However, the director remains unfazed, describing the movie as “an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men. I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.”

Although a Barbie sequel is not on the immediate horizon, fans of the film can rest assured that this is just the beginning of Mattel’s venture into the world of cinema. As for Greta Gerwig, her creative journey may lead her to new projects and fresh ideas in the future.
