CONCERT REVIEW: Bouke & The ElvisMatters Band Transform the Ziggo Dome Into A Las Vegas Spectacle
Every so often at Strife Mag, we like to take a deliberate detour from our regular programming. While our usual pulse beats for the high-octane world of rock, metal, and alternative subcultures, we simply couldn’t ignore the buzz surrounding a certain performer who has been taking the Netherlands by storm. For years, Dutch television has celebrated the art of the tribute act, but few have managed to transcend the “cover artist” label quite like Bouke. After dominating the airwaves and winning over the hearts of the nation, our curiosity was well and truly piqued. We grew up on the timeless discography of the King, so we headed to Amsterdam’s massive Ziggo Dome to witness the Viva Las Vegas show, and what unfolded was nothing short of a masterclass in showmanship.
On this Friday, the 20th of March, Bouke and the formidable ElvisMatters Band didn’t just play a concert; they elevated their game to a brand-new stratosphere. Any lingering doubts about whether a tribute act could command an arena of this magnitude were silenced within the first few chords. This wasn’t just a trip down memory lane; it was an impeccable production and a high-energy statement of the ever-lasting popularity and stature of Elvis Presley.
The stage production was a sight to behold, designed to accommodate the sheer scale of the ElvisMatters Band, which featured a razor-sharp brass section and a lush layer of backing vocalists. Towering above the musicians was a massive LED screen that served as a modern homage to the glitz and glamour of the classic Las Vegas residency era. It captured that larger-than-life energy perfectly, providing a visual backdrop that felt both nostalgic and fresh. To ensure the “Vegas” experience was complete, the evening was punctuated by a relentless barrage of special effects—pyrotechnics, CO2 cannons, and cascades of confetti that rained down on the thousands of fans in attendance.
Walking into the Ziggo Dome, we had purposefully refrained from looking up spoilers or footage. We wanted the full impact, and boy, did we get it. There were moments throughout the night where the line between the performer and the legend became hauntingly blurred. Bouke’s vocal performance is impeccable; he possesses the exact raw emotion, the specific timbre, and the booming power that defined Elvis Presley. From the signature hip-swivels to the commanding stage presence, he didn’t just mimic the King; he truly channelled the very spirit of the era.
Setlist-wise, there was an incredible amount to dig into. Spanning nearly three hours, the performance was a marathon of hits that touched on every facet of Elvis’s career. We got the upbeat rock ‘n’ roll ragers, the soul-stirring ballads, and even a beautifully executed detour into his Gospel roots. However, the true surprise came when Bouke stepped outside the Presley catalogue. Performing tracks by the likes of ABBA and Queen, he reimagined these classics through his signature “Elvis-esque” lens, proving his versatility as a vocalist in his own right.
The evening took an even more “local” turn halfway through when Bouke welcomed a familiar face to the Dutch audience: Roxeanne Hazes. The chemistry on stage was palpable as they performed a two-song duet, including a personal pick by Hazes that added a layer of intimacy to the arena setting. It was a testament to the diverse appeal of the show, which brought together a crowd of original fans seeking nostalgia and a younger generation discovering the magic of this music for the very first time.
Bouke and the ElvisMatters Band didn’t just perform these songs; they breathed life into a legacy. It was a monumental night that proved great music truly has no expiration date. If you’re kicking yourself for missing this one, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Next year, the team is heading to AFAS Live, backed by a full orchestra to further enhance that wall of sound. If tonight was any indication, you’ll want to secure your spot early.
