CONCERT REVIEW: Alter Bridge Prove Their Unrivaled Reliability At Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome
It’s been 13 years since we first caught Alter Bridge live. Back then, they were touring in support of their fourth studio album, and if we’re being honest, the primary draw for us that night was the opening act, Halestorm. However, the sheer force of their performance—and the masterpiece that is Fortress—turned us into lifelong fans before the house lights even came up.
Fast forward to today, and the trajectory of the band is clear. Back in the day, they played the Heineken Music Hall (now AFAS Live). For their last few stints in Amsterdam, they’ve graduated to the massive Ziggo Dome. While the venue wasn’t quite at its 17,000-capacity limit—with the second ring remaining closed—the arena floor and first tier were notably more packed than on their previous visit. It’s clear that Alter Bridge comfortably occupies that “mega-arena” sweet spot.
While a stacked European bill featuring Sevendust and Daughtry warmed up the crowd, we arrived just in time for the main event. Alter Bridge remain one of the most dependable machines in rock; they stick to a rigorous cycle of releasing new music every 2-3 years and hitting the road immediately after. This run comes in support of their 2025 self-titled release, though the setlist felt more like a career-spanning celebration than a promotional push.
Of the 16 tracks performed, only three were plucked from the new record. Instead, the band treated the audience to a balanced journey through their ever-growing discography. Heavy hitters like Isolation and the quintessential Metalingus sparked the expected fervour, while the soul-stirring Blackbird remains a masterclass in guitar work. We were particularly thrilled to see the Fortress era still getting plenty of love with three tracks making the cut: Cry Of Achilles, Addicted To Pain and the title track, Fortress.
An Alter Bridge show is best described in one word: reliable. When you step into an arena with this “supergroup,” you aren’t there for over-the-top theatrics or grandiloquent stage antics. You are there for some of the best-sounding live music in the industry. With four sleek LED screens providing minimalist visuals, the focus remains entirely on the impeccable musicianship of Myles Kennedy, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips.
That said, while the sonic precision is flawless, one can’t help but wonder if a bit more visual spectacle is needed to fully bridge the gap to a sold-out Ziggo Dome in the future. Nevertheless, the music speaks for itself.
The night also held a bit of a personal touch, as it was drummer Scott Phillips’ birthday. The front row of dedicated fans even prepared a signed birthday card, and the crew surprised him with a cake on stage, allowing thousands of fans to join in a brief, heartfelt celebration.
Ultimately, seeing Alter Bridge again was the treat it always is. They are a band that offers no gimmicks and no nasty surprises—just pure, high-octane rock and roll delivered with surgical precision.
