ALBUM REVIEW: PUP – ‘Who Will Look After The Dogs?’

Canadian punk band PUP are back with their fifth studio album called ‘Who Will Look After The Dogs?’. This full-length album dropped on Friday, May 2nd, and includes 12 tracks. After their 2022 album, they went back into the studio again and produced a new album with John Congleton, including songs like ‘Paranoid’, ‘Hallways’, ‘Get Dumber’ and ‘Olive Garden’.

This new record includes some amazing guitar riffs played by Stefan Babcock, who also is the lead singer of the band, and the other guitarist, Steve Sladkowski. The heavy bass lines are played by Nestor Chumak, and the uptempo rhythms on drums are played by Zack Mykula. This composition of four that started in Toronto, Canada, has given us a powerful sound within the punk rock scene since 2010, when the band was formed under the name Topanga. PUP’s debut record, ‘PUP’, was released on October 8, 2013, and since then they haven’t stopped doing what they seem to be enjoying the most, making and playing music with each other.

First Single

On the 9th of January PUP released ‘Paranoid’; it’s their first single and the start of the new era that would give us the album ‘Who Will Look After The Dogs?’. This song shows the amazing quality and talent that PUP has as a group. When starting the song, we immediately jump into the song with Stefan screaming, “Don’t call it a fallout.” After which we end up in a punk-esque verse that then leads into a catchy chorus that sticks in your head because of the lyrics. Halfway through the song, we merge into a break that is played in half-time, which gives a nice extra addition to the rest of the song because this half-time vibe lingers for the rest of the song. This song immediately gives a good start to the new era of PUP as a band, and this song also hypes people to check out PUP because of what else is to come in the near future.

Second Single

The second single from this record that they released was ‘Hallways’. It was released on the 12th of February. Together with this song, the album was announced, and it also included the cover art, including the title of the record and a car with dogs in it. When first listening to it, it sounds different from Paranoid, but the feelings of a little slower song with the lyrics being about the theme of not wanting to address the loss of someone/something really put you into a state of thinking about life. Lyrics like ‘Cause when one door closes / It might never open’ and ‘I’m losing the will to keep dragging on, but I can’t die yet ’cause who will look after the dog?’ reinforce these thoughts. Even though it has the classic PUP punk rock guitar sound throughout the song, it feels a little more experimental than the first single they released. The mixing and production on the song are done very well, and the instrumentation of the song is very nice to listen to. This is also the song on the album that includes the album title of the record.

Third Single

The next song they released was ‘Get Dumber, which features multi-talented artist and good friend of PUP, Jeff Rosenstock. Together with this song, they also announced a tour throughout the US together with Jeff after they announced a tour for Europe and the UK earlier this year. This song sounds like a song that fits both of their styles in music. A punk-rock song with heavy guitars, uptempo rhythm and a great bassline. When listening to the song, you can clearly hear that they had a lot of fun making this song. Jeff says the lyrics: “Oooooooohhhhhhh, lyrics.” Stefan explains that Jeff forgot the lyrics and said this during the recording, and they found it so funny they decided to keep it in the song. Together with a song, they also released a music video that was animated by Dragan Miljkovic, which is really well done, and it makes the song even funnier than it already was. And it also included the members playing their instruments and the singers singing in a microphone. All around, this is just a really good and fun song, and for the PUP and Jeff Rosenstock fans, it is very iconic that they now, after all those years, finally have an official track together.

Final Single

The final single was released on the 29th of April, which was 3 days before the release of the actual album, and the song is called ‘Olive Garden’. This song is only a minute and 52 seconds long, but the song is amazing. The distortion of the guitar sounds amazing, and the riff they play during the chorus also is very catchy. Then we get into a refrain where they sing “Ah-ah”, which is going to be recognisable when played live during their upcoming tour and that the whole crowd can sing along to. It sounds a bit like PUP in 2016 but then more experimental. The ending of the song also is sort of abrupt with a lot of distortion, which gives it a perfect ensign to a punk song.

First Part of the Album

We start off the album with the song ‘No Hope’; This song is about feeling hopeless and emotionally drained, especially in the context of a relationship or personal failure and it immediately sets the tone of the album with good guitar riffs with distortion played by Stefan and Steve, with an uptempo and good rhythm with cool fills played by Zack and Nester also add a nice bassline to it. It also includes cool vocal harmonies, and it sounds like a classic PUP-style song. It shows how amazing PUP as a band is even after being around in the scene since 2010, meanwhile they are still evolving as a band. It also has a nice break in the song where there is almost no sound before going into the ending of the song where you hear a loud guitar noise that leads into ‘Olive Garden’. This song is “very stupid but wonderful”, as Stefan explains. It’s noisy and raw but has a nice melodic touch to the song, giving the feeling of a sort of anxiety because of the amount of distortion that is used during the song. After this song we move into ‘Concrete’. This feels like a little more of an emotional song in comparison to the other two; the tempo is a bit calmer, the singing voice sounds a bit more sad and the chords create a sad style. The melodic vibes in the chorus make a beautiful song and make it a pleasure to listen to. Next up we move into ‘Get Dumber’; this is a classic punk song that features Jeff Rosenstock on it. Stefan says that he wrote the song in the basement of Jeff when he was on tour. Not only did they release this amazing punk song with great guitar riffs, but they also announced a co-headlining tour together. Not for the first time; they did this about ten years ago as well. “I recorded the first demo for it on his guitar using his mics and his computer. Maybe because the ghost of Jeff was in the room with me, I always imagined our voices on this song together, so I was very happy when he agreed to sing on it.” says Stefan about the song. With the uptempo in the song and catchy guitar riffs, it stays in your head and makes it a truly iconic song. After this song that they produced together with Jeff, we get to hear ‘Hunger For Death’. It’s a bit of a quieter and slower song, but the lyrics make this song very powerful and fit perfectly on this album. The instrumental break towards the ending of the song gives you the feeling of actual anxiety, with distorted and hard-sounding guitars strengthening this feeling. We end the first part of the album with ‘Needed To Hear It’. It sounds like a classic PUP song with heavy guitar riffs that sound nice in your ear, a cool bassline that gives the groove to the song and a sick drumming pattern that makes it danceable. In the song he says, I was sick and tired of letting you blame me for all your fucking problems, just ‘cause you couldn’t solve them.” The theme of the song is about a breakup. This theme is not only reflected in this song but is recycled several times throughout this album.

Second Part of the Album

We start off the second part of the album with ‘Paranoid’. It was the first single released from the album and has the most streams so far, well deserved. It’s an amazing song to start off this new era, and this song immediately paints a picture of the vibe of the album. This song is relatively uptempo and brings a lot of energy into this album. Then we move into ‘Falling Outta Love’. It’s another song about breaking up. The track hits hard with fast guitars and Zack’s relentless drumming sending the emotion forward. Stefan’s vocals sound pretty raw here; his voice cracks with just the right amount of desperation, capturing the feeling of spiralling after love falls apart. The instrumental break gives the song an extra addition before launching back into the final chorus. The next song up is a slightly slower one called ‘Hallways’. The second single that was released before the album came out, this song is about keeping hope even though you broke up with someone. The meaning of the song is beautiful, because with this song they try to pass on hope. Despite the fact that people feel bad after breaking up with their ex, you should keep holding on. The song feels a little more experimental, but it worked out really well. The song is a pleasure to listen to because of the tempo and the catchy guitar chorus, and also the switch to half-time during the song works super well. The next one on the record is called ‘Cruel’; it’s a pretty short one but a really strong song. The guitar riff the song starts off with captures the feeling of not meaning to be causing pain or suffering to others. The extremely noisy outro that gets created by the distortion from the guitars getting introduced with a great drum fill is an amazing add-on to the song and perfectly ends the song. After the heavy ending of Cruel, we move into ‘Best Revenge’. This song has one of the better lyric writings on the album; it’s another song about being in a breakup and feeling that life is falling apart after the breakup while using a lot of emotions during the song. The relatively calm tempo fits perfectly with the theme of the song, and the harmony during the chorus also sounds beautiful due to the good mixing that is used. The instrumental break and the bridge use a cool instrumental with a cool guitar solo that tops it off during the bridge, meanwhile Stefan is singing in the background. Then we move into the final part of the song where everything comes together and finishes off the song with an abrupt ending. And then we arrive at the last song, ‘Shut Up’. It feels like the album went by very quickly, and we end with a good album closer song that sums up the theme ‘breakup’ very well. Even though the song is more about feeling stuck and useless while someone you care about is moving on and doing well. Stefan compares their unmotivated life to the other person’s success, showing feelings of jealousy, regret, and self-doubt. It’s honest and sad and shows how hard it can be to watch someone move forward while you’re still lost. This can also be heard well in the instrumental; it starts quietly with a simple guitar that only plays chords, and slowly the song builds up with an instrumental break towards the end of the song; more and more is added, and the drums fill in until all the instruments come together during the last chorus after the bridge. We end the song with an instrument where you can hear the different talents of the musicians. The song ends abruptly, and with it, the album.

Conclusion

That was the album, a beautiful whole with as main theme songs about ‘breakup’. We will see a lot more of this talented band from Canada, because in the coming months they will be on tour in the UK & EU, US & Canada. What makes ‘Who Will Look After The Dogs?’ stand out is how PUP manages to mix raw emotion with explosive punk energy. The lyrics are deeply personal and vulnerable, but the music remains loud, gritty, and fun. It’s an album that invites both chaos and a lot of meaningful lyrics, one you can cry to and scream along with at a show. Whether you’re new to PUP or a longtime fan, this record proves they’re still evolving without losing what makes them great.

ALBUM REVIEW: L.S. Dunes – ‘Violet’

Heavy basslines, catchy guitar riffs, great rhythm, and an amazing voice that sounds like an angel. L.S. Dunes are back for their second studio album, ‘Violet’. This full-length album dropped on Friday, January 31st, and includes 10 tracks, one less than their first record, ‘Past Lives’. Featuring songs including: ‘Fatal Deluxe’, ‘Machines’, ‘Paper Tigers’ and the title track ‘Violet’.

Their second album includes incredible guitar riffs written by Frank Iero who also is a guitarist for My Chemical Romance and Travis Stever, the guitarist for Coheed and Cambria. The lyrics, written by Anthony Green, are relatable and sound absolutely amazing, making the songs feel personal and emotional. Tim Payne, who plays bass and part of the band Thursday, adds a strong additional sound to the mix, while Tucker Rule who also plays in the band Thursday, plays the drums amazingly, giving the band its signature post-hardcore style.

Their first single ‘Fatal Deluxe’, was released on September 20th. This song marks the beginning of a new era for L.S. Dunes. It opens with a cool guitar riff, immediately leading into Anthony screaming before he transitions into his beautiful singing voice. The track features catchy guitar riffs, made by Travis Stever, and a great rhythm that allows listeners to dance away their emotions. The song ends with a calm bridge, creating a contrast with the rest of the track, and the lyrics “Sure enough, sure enough, shut up” reveal a more emotional side of the band.

On October 17th, the band announced their second album, it’s going to be called ‘Violet’, that will be released on January 31. The following day, they dropped their second single ‘Machines’. This track opens with a solid rhythm and an incredible bassline played by Tim Payne. The chorus is powerful, and the song may remind listeners of ‘Grey Veins’ from their first album, but it brings something new and fresh. The backing vocals are strong and add another layer to the song, which makes it even better to listen to.

On October 23rd, Rise Against announced that they will tour Europe with L.S. Dunes, Dunes being their support act. A few weeks later, they released the third single from Violet, titled ‘Paper Tigers’, on November 22nd. The song begins with a catchy guitar riff written by Frank Iero, who initially wasn’t sure it was fit for L.S. Dunes, but after some reflection, he decided it works perfectly together with the band. The band says that everything fell into place when they ended up in the studio and all worked on this song. The song features powerful guitar riffs, cool drums, and a feeling of a heavy ballad. Anthony Green’s vocals shine on this track, sounding angelic and giving the song emotional depth.

The final single before the album that they released on January 8th, was the title track ‘Violet’. The song starts with a great rhythm from Tucker Rule that pulls you into the track, while the riff from the distorted guitar is incredibly addictive. Anthony’s passionate vocals in the chorus bring an emotional weight to the song. ‘Violet’ perfectly captures the band’s post-hardcore sound with a hard rhythm, distorted guitar riffs, and a deep, distorted bass tone that make it an excellent choice for the album’s title track.

The album opens with ‘Like Magick’, which starts with the lead vocalist singing acapella. As the band joins in, the tempo and rhythm remain relatively calm, before a bridge builds into a more heavy section of the song. A cool guitar riff substantiates Anthony’s vocals in the background, and the song ends on a calm note with staccato chords, making the ending emotional. Following ‘Like Magick’, we move into ‘Fatal Deluxe’, which fits perfectly on the album with its amazing guitar riffs and emotional charge. Anthony’s voice is incredible, the song’s energy makes it an amazing track. Next on the album is ‘I Can See It Now…’, the song opens with an awesome drum fill and a strong bassline. The chorus features a powerful message with the band’s heavy sound, in the background, you hear screams while Anthony sings, creating a feeling of someone trying to escape a palace the person is trapped in. The title track ‘Violet’, follows up, bringing everything we know and love about L.S. Dunes together in a perfect post-hardcore anthem. The song has all the elements fans expect, making it a fitting choice as the album title track. The first part of the album ends with ‘Machines’, this song has an outstanding bassline that makes it fit as an amazing closer for the first half of the album.

The second part of the album begins with ‘You Deserve To Be Haunted’. The track opens with a guitar slide and a fast strumming pattern that immediately pulls the listener in. Tucker Rule’s drumming shifts throughout the song during the verses, he plays a pattern on the toms, while in the chorus, he uses a more uptempo rhythm on the cymbals, which gives the song an amazing structure. After the second chorus, a guitar solo plays alongside the vocals, and the song ends with a spooky sound, leading us into the next track, ‘Holograms’. This song is more laid-back, compared to some other songs on the album. It’s rawer and less heavy, but still maintains the post-hardcore edge with its vocals and instrumentals. Even though it’s one of the album’s weaker tracks, it still sounds like an amazing song. Next up is ‘Paper Tigers’, this song stands out as one of the album’s best tracks. It features heavy guitar riffs played by Frank and Travis, fantastic rhythm, meaningful lyrics, and absolutely stunning vocals by Anthony Green. The song is a perfect example of the band’s evolving sound and music abilities. After this amazing track we move into ‘Things I Thought Would Last Forever’. The song feels powerful, with strong drums, guitar riffs, and a bassline that makes you want to dance. The final track on the album ‘Forgiveness’, is a stunning closer. It brings all the emotions of the album together in one song, with a calmer instrumental track that sounds incredible, the vocals complete the song and make it a great closer. The song ends with a fast build up, filled with fast drum beats, strummed guitar chords and a fast bass line, ending the album on a perfect note.

Violet is an amazing follow-up album to the first one. The band has clearly learned a lot from their debut, It’s a well-rounded record that balances heavy post-hardcore riffs, emotional depth and cool song structures. With the chemistry between Anthony and his incredible vocals, Frank his guitar work, Travis playing amazing riffs, the solid rhythm section from Tim Payne and cool basslines from Tucker Rule. L.S. Dunes have certainly made themselves known in the post-hardcore scene. Violet is a perfect example of the kind of music they are capable of producing, with the talent they possess. It’s just the beginning of the Violet era and I can’t wait for what’s to come. It’s exciting to imagine where this talented group of musicians will go next. If you enjoy heavy, melodic music with raw emotion, Violet is the album for you.

PUP Drop New Single Called ‘Paranoid’ And Announce A UK & EU Tour

PUP dropped their new single Paranoid. It’s their first single released since 2023, and together with the single, they announced a United Kingdom and Europe tour.

This song shows the amazing quality and talent the band PUP has: an amazing voice sung by Stefan Babcock, heavy guitars played by Steve Sladkowski and Stefan, a great bassline played by Nestor Chumak and an uptempo rhythm played by Zack Mykula. This new song shows us the punk sound PUP are known for.

Together with this song, they released a music video directed by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux & Clem Hoener. They played a secret show in a basement so they could show us the lyrics throughout the crowd.

Vocalist Stefan Babcock said that it wasn’t the right time to announce something, because of the wildfires in LA; they made a statement as the band on the release: “Just want to acknowledge this is a weird day to put out new music. We tried to reschedule last minute, but these things are sometimes out of our hands. Our thoughts are with everyone in LA right now. Take care of each other <3.”

Besides the single, they also have announced going on a tour in the UK and EU, where they said that a portion of proceeds from presale tickets sold via their website will go to the Sea-Watch crew.

CONCERT REVIEW: Jimmy Eat World Made Paradiso A Dancing Hall

On Monday, 11th November, Jimmy Eat World put on an amazing performance in Paradiso. The band, known for hits such as The Middle and Sweetness came back to the Netherlands after performing there in 2022. They put up a great setlist and bring amazing energy on stage, right from the start of the concert.

They opened with one of their more famous songs, Pain, taken off of their Futures album, followed by another track from that record.

The setlist consisted of songs from their earlier albums Clarity and Bleed American, but also some songs from their latest record called Surviving. Throughout the show, they played some of the fans’ favorite songs, such as The Middle and Bleed American

Halfway through the concert, frontman Jim Adkins told the crowd that this was the first country Jimmy Eat World ever played in Europe, and he told the crowd that he was happy to be back and play songs for everyone in the amazing venue.

Jimmy decided to play some acoustic songs; they played the songs Your House and Hear You Me. This gave the crowd some time to breathe and let out some tears before going back into the rock sound they are known for.

We ended the show with the songs A Praise Chorus and The Middle before Jimmy walked off stage for the first time. The crowd was not done with the concert yet and chanted, “We want more.” in the hope Jimmy would come back for an encore.

And they did; they wanted the crowd to dance one last time before calling it a night. The songs they played were Night Drive and The World Love You. What a perfect song to end the night and say goodbye to the crowd before leaving Amsterdam on their way to the United Kingdom for the rest of the tour.

what's happening with Linkin Park
Linkin Park 2024

ALBUM REVIEW: FROM ZERO, The New Record By Linkin Park

Linkin Park are back with music; their 8th studio album is released on Friday, November 15th, and it’s a full length album with 11 new songs. The new singer Emily Armstrong is ‘replacing’ Chester Bennington, who sadly passed away in 2017. 7 years after his death, the band decide to go through with the legacy of Linkin Park and put out a new record called From Zero.

From Zero contains 10 songs and an intro, such as ‘The Emptiness Machine’, ‘Heavy Is The Crown’, ‘Over Each Other’, and ‘Two Faced’. Even though I had to get used to the voice of the new singer at first, she sounds fantastic and made the album really feel like a Linkin Park album from the 00s again.

First single

The new album From Zero was announced during the first show Linkin Park played since October 27th. They opened the show on the 6th of September with their new single called The Emptiness Machine which was an introduction to the new singer of the band. The song starts off quietly with Mike singing, and before halfway through the song, Emily drops in; this is the first time we hear her voice for Linkin Park. She sings the chorus with lots of power in her voice; this song feels like a classic Linkin Park song with heavy guitars, lots of power, and uptempo.

Second single

The second single, Heavy Is The Crown, was released on the 24th of September. This song was made as a song for the 2024 League of Legends World Championship and is also appearing on the Netflix series Arcane. This is a song that contains the nu metal sound from Linkin Park and also has Mike rapping on it again. The 16-second long scream Emily has without taking a breath on the song, which is a super unique thing to be able to do, gives many fans the idea of Given Up where Chester had a 17-second long scream. The first time this song was performed live was in the Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany, on the 22nd of September. This was played before releasing it, which left many fans surprised when Emily did the scream live in the stadium.

Third Single

On the 24th of October, we got another single called Over Each Other; this was a much calmer song than the last 2 songs they’ve released. While it still contains some heavy guitar, the tempo is calmer, and it has a more sad vibe than the other singles. I do need to say that Emily’s voice fits the song very well, and it’s a pleasure to listen to when you have it on.

Final single

On the 13th of November, Linkin Park decided to drop the last single before the album release; it’s called Two Faced, and it starts off with the same sound you hear in Numb, we hear this before going into the part where the guitar drops in. The verses are rapped by Mike while the chorus is sung by Emily. This song sounds like the nu metal sound Linkin Park is known for; the sound of heavy guitars, good rhythm, and uptempo make it sound like a 00s Linkin Park song.

First part of the album

We start off with an intro of the album where we hear a voice say, “From zero. Like, from nothing.” Which indicates that this is a new start for Linkin Park with a new album. This intro leads into the first full song called ‘The Emptiness Machine.’ This sets the tone of the album and gives us the memo that Linkin Park are back. With the new vocalist Emily Armstrong and the new drummer Colin Brittain, the new era of Linkin Park has started, but with the same alternative/hard rock sound you know Linkin Park from. The next song on the album is called ‘Cut the Bridge’. This is a very catchy song with the catchphrase, “Cut it down, cut it down, down, cut it, cut it down.” This part of the song makes it catchy and something everyone can sing along to. This song is not as heavy as you are used to from Linkin Park, but the song still is an uptempo song with a nice drum beat that you can jump to when listening to the song. This is also the first time on this album that we hear Mike rapping again; this will come back more often throughout the rest of the album. To close off the first part of the album, we end with ‘Causality,’ a song where we jump in and we hear Emily putting on her screamy pants; we hear her throw out a very loud scream at the start of the song. After the intro we get into a heavy sound, with a heavy guitar riff played by Brad Delson; this is more of a metal song with Emily screaming and the drums being uptempo in the chorus and Mike rapping the verses in more of a screaming style, with a lot of power in his voice.

The second half of the album

We start off the second half of the album with ‘Overflow.’ This song starts off very calming; the tempo is a bit slower in this song, and the vocals of Mike and Emily are a lot calmer than in the other songs of the album. The song stays calm until the last part of the song, where the song gets a rougher and darker ending, with Emily screaming the song title. This shows the various qualities that Linkin Park possess as a band. After Two Faced, we move into ‘Stained’; this is a song that leans more towards the alt-rock side of music. With slightly less heavy guitars and a slightly calmer drum rhythm and slower tempo, it provides a more rock sound instead of the nu-metal. Nevertheless, this song still has a lot of power and emotions provided to it. The next song on the album is ‘IGYEIH’. This song is called IGYEIH, which is the abbreviation for I give you everything I have. We immediately hear this at the start of the song by Emily screaming, “I give you everything I have.” Followed by nice rough guitars and a nice drum rhythm, which makes you immediately interested in the rest of the song. It’s a nice and catchy song that’s almost entirely sung by Emily, except for a small part in the pre-chorus. After a small break, the song ends with Emily screaming, “From now on, I don’t need you.” This song is a powerful song, which is definitely worth listening to once, because it is also musically very well put together with Joe Hahn behind the record player, which can be heard clearly in this song but also in other songs. The last song on the album is called ‘Good Things Go.’ This is a perfect album closer because the song is about good things coming to an end, just like this album that ends after this song. It’s a very calm song and an emotional song. It is the last song of the album and therefore the closing song of the band’s first album after 7 years and the first album together with Emily. The instrumental of this song is a perfect ending for a good album with different genres in it because it is a kind of symphony that comes together in one. Sung with a lot of emotion, we say goodbye to this album and the first album of the new Linkin Park era.

Conclusion

This was the first album in 7 years, and what an amazing album Linkin Park have put out once again. The different genres of Linkin Park were clearly audible, and the new vocalist did an amazing job, even though it takes some time getting used to for people to hear Linkin Park without Chester singing. In conclusion, we can say that Linkin Park have started their new adventure with Emily Armstrong very well with this new album, and I can’t wait for the world tour to start and see what kind of music they’ll start to make in the future. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend everyone listen to this album at least once, because it really gives you the Linkin Park feeling even though Chester is no longer the singer of the band.
